Food Fest, Where the Only Activity is Eating

Lamb kebabs and Romanian sausage cooked on the grill and stuffed cabbage and sweet baklava dripping with honey are among the menu options visitors to St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church can expect during the Food Fest this Saturday.

"Pita slices are the best seller," Marian Coca said, while preparing food for the event in the church kitchen with fellow volunteers Tuesday evening.

A Pita Slice is spinach and cheese in homemade fillo dough.

St. Dimitrie's is located at 504 Sport Hill Road in Easton. Food Fest is similar to the three-day festival it hosts every September, but it's only for one day from noon to 9 p.m. ... and the only activity is eating.

Audrey Fatsy, president of the St. Dimitrie Ladies Auxiliary, said the two events are the church's biggest fundraisers. Proceeds go to operations and church missions.

Fatsy said the church had just collected money for tornado victims in Oklahoma through the International Orthodox Christian Center.

And St. Dimitrie's youth group recently hosted a luncheon for Easton Senior Center patrons at the church, which was a big hit, according to Fatsy.

St. Dimitrie first opened in town in April of 2008 and it holds two Sunday services, a 9 a.m. all in English led by Fr. George Coca and another in Romanian and English by Fr. Cornel Todeasa.

Marian Coca, Fr. Coca's wife, said her husband is assistant priest of the church.

On Tuesday, trays of stuffing for the cabbage were ready for pickup on a table outside the church hall, where people will eat Saturday.

In the kitchen were loaves of Sweet Bread (plain and with nuts), trays of curabia (which are butter cookies), koulourakia (twist shaped cookies) and baklava.

The women will have spent 15 days of food preparation leading up to the festival, when food for the main dishes will be cooked up fresh.

"I live in this kitchen. I enjoy it," Coca said with a smile. "I like feeding people."
