Stamford Mayor Pavia Visits With Synchronized Skating Teams

The teams were practicing for the 13th Annual Terry Conners Open.

On Friday, November 30, 2012, the synchronized teams of Skating Club of Southern Connecticut of Stamford, CT were visited by Mayor Michael A. Pavia during their practice prior to the upcoming 13th Annual Terry Conners Synchronized Skating Open held this weekend.

The Terry Conners Rink is home ice for the Southern Connecticut Synchronized Skating organization representing the Skating Club of Southern Connecticut.  The club skates three synchronized skating lines:  the Shadows (Open Juvenile), Shimmers (Pre-Juvenile) and Sprites (Beginner 2).

After practicing for three months, these teams hoped to make synchronized skating as exciting to watch as possible. Emily Merole, a Stamford resident, has been a synchronized team member for eight years, most recently on the Shadows team.

“The program is more difficult this year, but I enjoy the challenge of learning new things," Merole said. "We feel like a big family, and the practice sessions can be warm and inviting. We appreciate the Mayor taking the time to visit us”.

The Shadows, Shimmers and Sprites along with hundreds of other teams from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and all around the Eastern Seaboard will be demonstrating choreographed programs that will be judged for speed, difficulty of maneuvers and precision, as well as for style and artistic expression. The Terry Conners Synchronized Skating Open attracts about 1,000 skaters and coaches, and over 1,000 fans and supporters over the two day event.

This competition is part of the Eastern Synchronized Skating Challenge Series. Beginner 1, 2, or 3 teams and preliminary, pre-juvenile, open juvenile, open collegiate or open adult teams were all invited to participate.
