The Redding Board of Education recommends a $21.75 million budget to fund Redding Elementary School and John Read Middle School for the 2013-2014 school year.
The number represents a 0.5 percent increase to the schools' current operating budget.
The school board unanimously approved the 2013-2014 budget at its meeting last week.
At the board's Jan. 8 budget meeting, Dr. Bernard Josefsberg, superintendent of schools, recommended a 1.75 percent increase of $378,122.
Because of three retirements, underestimating grant money and the fact money set aside for additional school security initiatives was removed from the budget and will be voted upon during tomorrow's special town meeting, the increase shrunk to $111,000, according to the school board's meeting minutes.
Some parents expressed concern that staffing decreased in the budget proposal, particularly in the fields of physical education and special education (three paraprofessionals). Josefsberg said the physical education program has evolved into a web-based interactive program, and can be delivered to students differently than physical education programs of yore. Brian Farrell, director of special services, said the decrease in special education paraprofessionals stemmed from changes in individual education plans, which dictate staffing.
The budget now moves to the Redding Board of Finance, which is scheduled to meet next on Feb. 25.
