Eastonite Charged with First Degree Larceny

She and her husband were both charged after they allegedly stole more than $42,000 worth of electricity from United Illuminating.

An Easton couple were both charged with allegedly tampering with an electric meter at their Bartling Drive residence following an investigation conducted by United Illuminating.

Maria Pennino, 50, was charged with larceny in the first degree and theft of a utility while her husband, Marc Pennino, 49, was charged with conspiracy to commit larceny in the first degree and conspiracy to commit theft of a utility.

According to Connecticut statutes, larceny in the first degree involves the theft of something in excess of $10,000. According to Easton Police, between Dec. 27, 2005 and July 27, 2012, the couple used $42,579.24 worth of electricity for which they didn't pay.

Larceny in the first degree is a Class B felony in Connecticut. 

The couple turned themselves in to police on Jan. 21 after learning there were warrants for their arrest.

They both posted individual $25,000 surety bonds and are due to appear in court Feb. 6.
