Collision Alert in New Lexus Leads to DUI Arrest

A Wyldewood Road man was charged with DUI on Jan. 9 after striking a utility pole on his street in his 2014 Lexus at around 6:31 p.m. A collision alert in the new car led officers to the scene of the accident, according to police.

Police found the Lexus against the split utility pole, but no driver, the report said.

The driver, Eric Lawton, 38, was later found at his home. Police said he was not injured, but added there was an odor of an alcoholic beverage on him. After being asked several times to produce his driver's license, police said Lawton refused.

Easton EMS evaluated Lawton and United Illuminating was contacted about the pole.

Breath tests taken at police headquarters showed a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, according to the report.

Lawton was charged with DUI, failure to drive right, evading responsibility, traveling too fast, failure to surrender license and interfering with an officer. He was released on $1,000 bond for a Jan. 21 court date.
