Bethel Police Make Arrest in Fatal Cycling Accident

New Milford man charged in accident that took the life of a Weston cyclist.

Bethel police charged a 21-year-old New Milford man with evading responsibility and misconduct with a motor vehicle in connection with the Oct. 20 accident at Route 302 and Hawleyville Road that took the life of Weston bicyclist Thomas Steinert-Threlkeld.

Alexander Scott Lee, of Bel Air Drive, New Milford, was arrested at his place of employment in Brookfield on an arrest warrant Tuesday evening.

He was charged with evading responsibility of a fatal accident, misconduct with a motor vehicle, tampering with physical evidence and making an improper left turn.

According to police, Steinert-Threlkeld was cycling west on Route 302 when his bike allegedly made contact with Lee’s car, causing Steinert-Threlkeld to swerve and fall. Another vehicle making a turn on Route 302 struck the 59-year-old Weston man, who later succumbed to his injuries.

Lee is being held on $150,000 bond and will be arraigned in Danbury Superior Court on Dec. 4.

Court records show that Lee is currently facing multiple drug and weapons possession charges stemming from a January 2012 arrest (to which he pleaded ‘not guilty’ and was given accelerated rehabilitation) and another on Oct. 29 of this year.

Both arrests were made by the Bethel Police Department.
