The Easton Police Department cleared First Selectman Thomas Herrmann of any wrongdoing after a political rival filed a complaint accusing him of assault in the guise of a handshake.

Easton Police Chief James Candee issued the following statement Wednesday:

On June 24, 2013 Robert Webbe, Maple Road, Easton submitted a complaint to the Easton Police Department alleging that on August 16, 2012 he was assaulted by First Selectman Thomas Herrmann.

The assault alleged by Mr. Webbe was a handshake with Mr. Herrmann that Mr. Webbe claimed forced him to the floor.

A thorough investigation failed to corroborate the allegation brought by Mr. Webbe.
