The crash occurred at about 4:45 p.m. near 150 Cedar Road when the boy was thrown from his bike over a stone wall and struck a cinder block that was on the ground at the base of a tree, according to Wilton Police Lt. Donald Wakeman.

The child's identity has not been released, Wakeman said, to “give the family time” to contact relatives and friends.

“We don't know why he lost control of the bike,” said Wakeman. “We've interviewed the friends he was riding with and they mention he may have turned his head to look back, and that may have contributed to him drifting across the road.”

The boy was riding with two other Weston boys, ages 12 and 13, at the time of the crash. He was not wearing a helmet, said Wakeman.

All three youths we riding east on Cedar Road, having turned left onto the street from Cobbs Mill Road, when the victim drifted and hit a slight incline on the east shoulder which launched him over the stone wall. He struck the cinder block with his face and head.

“We don't have an indication of how fast they were traveling,” said Wakeman. “But he may have gained speed as he was coming down the hill.”

After emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Wilton EMS transported the boy to Norwalk Hospital where he was pronounced dead Monday evening.

Wakeman said that Weston's Youth Services Division is coordinating counseling for any children who were friends of the victim.

The police department's accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash, and anyone who may have seen the three riding in the area near the time of the accident are asked to contact the Wilton Police Department at 203-834-6260.
