Sally Ride, 61, First American Woman in Space

Sally Ride died today at the age of 61, according to NPR.

Sally Ride, the first American woman to visit space, died today after a 17-month bout with pancreatic cancer, NPR reports. She was 61.

According to NPR, Ride went into space in 1983 aboard the Challenger and again in October 1984. Plans to go back into space a third time were scrapped after the Challenger exploded in 1986. 

Ride was born on May 26, 1951 in Encino, Calif.
