"Scene" in the Woods

Some call it Granny Graffiti, others Yarn Bombing, this urban artwork has left the city for a tree near you.

Recently seen in the Trout Brook Valley area of Aspetuck Land Trust, these whimsical knitted (or are they crocheted) "caterpillars" have appeared on tree limbs beside the purple walking trail. Origin unknown, they pose an entertaining moment of art meets nature. Thank you to the creator... both of the art and of the nature.

UPDATE: As of my last walk, this whimsy in the woods has been removed. In a local newspaper, the director of the land trust voiced his disapproval and is quoted as saying "...birds could get caught in them".

You might ask when was the last time you saw a bird caught in a sweater hanging on a clothesline? Could the birds not ultimately use this as nesting material?

While some might label these as a distraction, I found them to be otherwise. Mostly watching my steps along the uneven trail, I stopped when I first saw these and then was able to appreciate the setting.

The pictures show these knittings as well as another depicting what I suppose the director might be concerned about!
