Community Corner

Caregiver Appreciation Event

In honor of
National Family Caregiver Month, on the evening of November 8, from 6:30 p.m. –
8:30 p.m., Ridgefield’s glamorous Adam Broderick Salon will be the site of a Caregiver
Appreciation celebration:  to thank the
remarkable, hardworking caregivers of husbands, wives, family members, friends,
neighbors and patients with Alzheimer’s Disease.   This event is held in partnership with the
Alzheimer’s Association CT Chapter.

Adam’s desire to
participate in the community is evident, stating; “Awhile back, I made a
commitment to be part of the community in a significant way, to reach out and
be a catalyst to the organizations helping to improve people’s lives. When the
leadership of the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association told me
all they do, my whole team got on board. Almost everybody knows somebody whose
life has changed because of Alzheimer’s. To support their work and honor
caregivers is absolutely the right thing to do”.

“We’re planning an
evening of fun, mingling, relaxation and pure pleasure. There’ll be good things
to eat and drink, demonstrations relating to hair and make-up.  Since purple is the Alzheimer’s Association’s
theme color, we’ll have 25 shades of purple nail enamel, eye shadows, purple
hair chalk and extensions.  The staff
will be here to answer questions about hair, cosmetics, massage.  The community has been very good to us here at
the Ridgefield Salon, and I want to give back whatever I can to the community.”

Caregivers and
family members will agree: there’s no better place than the Adam Broderick
Salon to make people feel better about themselves. That’s the point of the
evening: to make sure that caregivers know that in addition to caring for
someone else, they must take care of themselves, too.

November is
National Family Caregiver Month and the Alzheimer’s Association CT Chapter
estimates that there are 175,000 caregivers for people with Alzheimer’s disease
or related dementia in Connecticut.  With
research, clinical trials and more openness about the disease, Alzheimer’s need
not always be a fear-based illness. Much is being done, much more is needed,
but there is more reason for hope than ever before, more treatment possibilities,
earlier diagnosis and medications that can help with symptom management. This
good news deserves to be celebrated.
