• On this day in 1877, the United States Congress declared that Rutherfurd B. Hayes would be the nation's 19th president even though Samuel Tilden, Hayes' opponent, won the popular vote. Hayes was inaguarated two days later.

• On this day in 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points — an NBA record which is still intact today — for the Philadelphia Warriors, who defeated the New York Knicks 169-147.
