Dog Adoption Event: How Many Dogs Will Be Named 'Sandy'?

Photos from the puppy adoption event at Stratford Petco...

At the close of the first day of our dog adoption event at Stratford Petco on Saturday, Oct. 27, about half the 80 puppies and dogs up from Georgia were paired up with homes -- all while Hurricane Sandy crept closer.

Here are a couple photos of happy families and their equally happy new dogs.

Thank you Dierdre for the opportunity to meet you at the adoption event. I appreciate your hard work and dedication to your cause. I think the $350 fee is an acceptable one for the transportation, payment of "paid staff" (most are volunteers) and the vaccination and medications for the animal. I think you have a well run organization and please let us know when we can make an announcement on your return to Stratford for another adoption event!

Furthermore, while I believe in adopting out the local animals from the shelters, we tend to live in a specific world where people ("consumers") are pretty breed and size specific and that's where an organization like Colbert can really help. Thank you again!

For anyone who doesn't understand why adoption fees exist and are often hundreds of dollars, just read the article at the below link. It is sort of a "Dog Adoption Fees 101" or "Adoption Fees for Dummies" sort of article that just hits the basics. Link: http://dogs.about.com/cs/rescue/a/aa031503a.htm

I think $350 is a little steep actually for a mutt that is an adult with out lineage, or papers. But a lot of shelters charge that. The problem I find with this is you can go around the corner and any shih tzu back yard breeder is charging around that for a puppy, with papers, and a fresh start (no fear of past abuse that might cause behavioral issues) AND no application wait time, to get references checked ect. Honestly that is why people don't rescue, when for about the same price you can get a puppy. Stratford Animal control has a fee of $150 for an adult dog. to me that is very reasonable. I agree if you can't afford $350 then you can't afford a dog, and it isn't about being able to afford that but about being able to use that $150 saves on something else for the dog you have brought into the family. That is why I think it is just a bit steep. (I should talk, my two cavaliers came from a reputable breeder and honestly we won't discuss what I spent.. shameful.. but I ADORE the breed and wanted to know their whole health history with such a sickly health history in the breed)
