South End Offers a 'Modern Tavern' in New Canaan

The new restaurant, located on Pine Street, is comfortable for both the casual and dressed up diner.

A “modern tavern” has opened its doors on Pine Street in New Canaan.

South End—which took over the space of Pine Social—welcomed customers for the first time on Sept. 4, according to Keith Siskind, the restaurant’s general manager.

“The response and the support of the community has been awesome,” Siskind told Patch. “It’s been fantastic.”

Siskind describes the restaurant as a “modern tavern” and says South End’s atmosphere is comfortable and approachable.

“It’s lively,” he said. “The ambiance is described as energetic. It’s definitely something comfortable. Come here, and there’s no pretension.”

The restaurant’s cuisine is “definitely American” with Italian and French influences, Siskind said.

“There’s something for everybody,” he said. “We’re trying to be unique and different.”

Siskind said the restaurant’s name just had to do with the fact it’s located in the southern end of town.

“The space was available and felt very comfortable,” Siskind said. “We were looking for a little while. We felt that we could be successful here, and so far, so good.”

Chef Nick Martschenko brings his experience from Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., and Gramercy Tavern and i Trulli in Manhattan. Siskind previously managed Tarry Lodge in Port Chester, N.Y.

The restaurant features 100 seats and 30 seats in the bar area, as well as a 20 seat private dining area.
