Pet owners know just how easy it is to become dog-tired running around to the vet, groomer, pet store, and beyond. When all those trips can make owners feel like they're chasing their own tails, area residents have a brand new option.
The Stamford Veterinary Center & My Pet Lodge located at 633 Hope Street is an one-stop-shop of all pet care needs and it's hoping to make the lives of Fairfield County pet owners and their furry friends a little easier.
The business has three on-site veterinarians with more than 40 years of service between them. Owner of the site, Marcus J. Suppo, DVM, has 15 years under his belt. He originally had an office in Mamaroneck, NY, before moving to Stamford with his wife and three children at the end of 2010.
"In Mamaroneck, I was doing something similar, operating an animal hospital and pet resort," Suppo said. "I wanted to open a similar facility in Stamford after we moved. Something all inclusive. There's more space here and it's such a pet-friendly city."
To help, Suppo brought on board Nancy W. Maloney, DVM, and Janety M. Triplett, VMD, with 25 years between them, to round out his veterinary staff. There are, all total, about 10 employees on site.
The new site is 10,000 square feet of pet-oriented care. There are top-of-the-line medical services available, including four exam rooms, a surgery room, x-ray and ultrasound machines available and special medical boarding space. Doggy (or Kitty) Daycare and overnight boarding is also available on site. There is large indoor and outdoor space available for play in rain or shine.There is a groomer located with space up front and a retail area set up with all kinds of pet-related products and an expanding selection of goods.
"I saw a need in Stamford for an all-inclusive animal care facility," Suppo said. "People are pressed for time these days. They've got to go there for grooming and there for food and there for a doctor visit. They can come here to receive everything they need for their pet and know that the facility is being operated by a veterinarian."
Suppo points out the draining and air-filtration system that he believes really set the center apart from its competitors.
Every room has multiple floor drains. The ducts are completely cycling in new air seven times every hour, individually in both the medical areas and boarding areas.
Each room is capable of being thoroughly cleaned, as no room has anything fully sitting on the floor. Everything is raised to make disinfecting and cleaning easier.
"I, let's say, 'mystery-shopped' the competition and looked for ways we could be—I don't want to say better—but different," Suppo said. "This was the number one way to set ourselves apart. Everything here is perfectly set up to keep things clean and, most importantly, smell nice."
After a slow opening interrupted by Hurricane Sandy that pushed back growth a few weeks, things are slowly starting to pickup steam. The center is developing a nice trickle of customers and continually looking to give back to the community in which it operates.
The center is working closely with the Stamford Animal Care & Control Shelter and charitable organization Outreach to Pets in Need. The center offers help in the form of low-cost boarding options to the groups and is working on arranging low-cost spay and neuter options, free microchip clinics, adoption events and similar efforts.
On Thursday, January 24, the center will be hosting Rob Mullin, owner of K-9 Wizard & Company at 7 p.m. for a free seminar aimed at new pet owners who may have gotten a puppy over the holidays.
