Norwalk Oyster Festival to Open Friday Night as Originally Planned

Opening time is still 6 p.m. Friday for the Norwalk Oyster Festival. The ground at Veterans Park is dry enough, festival organizers said.

The Norwalk Seaport Association announced Thursday that the Norwalk Oyster Festival will start at 6 p.m. on Friday night as originally planned.

"The Norwalk Seaport Association feels the park will be in good condition," Oyster Festival Chairman Jerry Toni said in a news release. "The forecast is for improved weather on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we are looking forward to a successful weekend."

Earlier in the day festival officials announced that wet ground at might cancel the first night of the event, although it would continue on Saturday and Sunday. Late Thursday afternoon, after another look at the grounds, officials said they were sticking to the Friday opening date.

"The Norwalk Seaport Association announces that the 34th annual Oyster Festival will go on as planned all three days of the weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday," the association said in a news release. "Earlier today, Norwalk Seaport Association volunteers assessed the state of the fields at Veteran's Park to determine their conditions after the torrential rain this week so soon after Hurricane Irene."

Earlier on Thursday, that the ground in the section park where the barbecue pit and competition had been planned was too wet, and so that part of the festival would be canceled for all three days.
