A jolly-roger day of fun is planned for Sun., Sept. 16 during the second annual “Pirate Day” at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

That scallywag staff of the Aquarium will offer a treasure chest of pirate-themed activities all day, between 10 a.m. & 5 p.m.

Lads and lasses are encouraged to come to The Maritime Aquarium on the 16th dressed in pirate garb. Come a-wearin’ yer finest as Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Henry Morgan, Anne Bonney or even Captain Jack Sparrow or the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Stop by the activity table for crafts and jokes. In the Toy Boat Workshop, design your own skull-and-crossbone rig ($5 fee). And, weather permitting, kids can lob “cannonballs” at a feisty freebooter commanding a boat on the Aquarium’s riverfront courtyard.

At 1:30 p.m., enjoy a family-friendly performance by the bumbling pirate Billy Bones, who will offer zany lessons about being a boisterous buccaneer.

The Aquarium’s “Pirate Day” will be on the eve of International Talk Like A Pirate Day, which was started in 1995 by two land-lubbers from Albany, N.Y.  The Sept. 19 “holiday” was something of a low-key event until syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry latched on in 2002. Now, me mateys, thar be people in 40 countries who celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
