Tragic Bicycle Accident Sharpens Focus on Safety

The tragic accident that claimed the life of A.J. Cina, 12, of Weston when he lost control of his bicycle in Wilton sparked an effort to promote safety for bicycle riders and pedestrians.

The Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee in Weston wants to form a safety group in town.

"The group's goal is to promote safety," said Ray Rauth, chairman of the Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee.

Rauth is hoping for a public discussion on safety measures "agreeable to everyone" like following helmet rules and walking on the right side of the road.

He is currently reaching out to public officials, who may decide to become involved with the effort.

Rauth spoke to the Police Commission at its meeting Tuesday night and at an afternoon committee meeting he told members the commissioners seemed receptive to the idea.

Planning for a safety committee is in the early stages.
