Hey Neighbor, Sherwood Island Could Use Your Help Saturday

Volunteers are needed to remove and replace 3,500 feet of fence at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is hoping you'll lend a hand this Saturday.

DEEP, according to a news release, "today [Tuesday] that there is still time for volunteers to sign up for this Saturday’s State Parks Appreciation Day and help prepare a favorite state park for the summer season."

Commissioner Robert Klee said, '“DEEP’s first-ever State Parks Appreciation Day is the perfect opportunity to show your  support for our state parks as we celebrate the Centennial of the park system."

On State Parks Appreciation Day this Saturday, volunteers will have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and help our park staff with everything from painting, gardening, and landscaping to trail maintenance and general cleanup.”

Commissioner Klee said, “We are coordinating State Parks Appreciation Day with the Friends of Connecticut State Parks groups at numerous parks across the state.  These organizations share our commitment to making certain our parks are ready for the opening of the summer season and provide a first-rate outdoor recreation experience for all visitors.”

“State Parks Appreciation Day” is part of Connecticut’s State Park Centennial – the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state park system.    Connecticut’s state park system, which dates back to 1913-1914, now includes 107 parks which offer everything from hiking, picnicking, and boating, to camping and environmental education programs.
