A Taste of Easton: 'It's a Nice Community Gathering'

Fresh vegetables grown on Easton's farms, talented local musicians and booths featuring town businesses were on full display Saturday afternoon as families flocked to Aspetuck Park for the second annual "A Taste of Easton"celebration.

Aside from food being served at a concession area, children played in a moon bounce and raffle tickets were sold for the chance to win prizes donated by town businesses and individuals. Easton artists also donated paintings as prizes.

Robin Pantalena, a volunteer, said the event raises funds to benefit organizations in town. The Easton Senior Center happened to be the focus of the first two years.

"Last year, we raised enough money to donate a defibrillator to the senior center," Pantalena said.

This year, Pantalena said a new generator will allow the center to be used as a heating, cooling and charging station when residents lose power during major storms.

Green "A Taste of Easton" T-shirts were sold from a table just off of the parking lot.

Live music was played by the Wonderful Trio, featuring Easton's own Bob Bull, and String Fingers led by Easton's Dan Tressler.

Children had fun jumping around inside Easton Park and Rec's Bounce House, playing games on the baseball diamond led by the Easton Community Center and creating arts and crafts in an Easton Arts Center program.

The menu included "Build-a-Burger" with Easton farm fixin’s, roasted hot dogs, veggie burgers, grilled chipotle parmesan corn, tomato salad, Easton Iced Tea, and ice cream flavored especially for Easton.

Wiley Mullins of Easton, who owns Uncle Wiley's Seasonings & Spices in Fairfield, was in charge of the food.

"Robin and I came up with this idea two years ago," Mullins said over a plate of food at a picnic table. "We just ran with it and people joined in. Before we knew it, we were all slicing and dicing tomatoes and cucumbers and making tea. It was great."

On Saturday, apple tea made with fruit grown in town was served.

"It's just Easton food," Mullins said. "Corn, tomatoes, cucumbers and apples. We're celebrating Easton."

Susan Barrett of Fairfield was among the afternoon crowd that came out for the celebration. She also attended last year's event.

"This is fabulous," she said. "It's another beautiful day. It's a nice community gathering."
