The Junior Swim Team at the Redding Country Club had a jam-packed week, with home meets on July 14th, 15th, and 17th against, teams from New Fairfield, Shepaug, and New Milford.

The three events kept the swimmers busy preparing for their next competition. As the week progressed, Redding continued to tune its athletic abilities and win more heats.

While the RCC kids like winning heats, their real goal is Statelines, a statewide competition where all the best summer swimmers compete. This week, 7 more swimmers joined the 10 qualifiers from the first meet.

Some of these competitors included Hayden Beach—a 12-year-old athlete who will move on in both the butterfly and free-style with the times of 38.96 and 34.72 seconds—and Thomas Colby—a younger swimmer who made a 22.0 second splash in the 25-yard freestyle.

The RCC swimmers were not the only superstars in the meets. New Fairfield won two medley relays and dominated the 14 and under category in the boy’s freestyle, boy’s backstroke, girl’s backstroke, and girl’s butterfly. Shepaug swam both the 8 and under and the 10 and under breaststroke unopposed. On Thursday, New Milford won both the medley relays they competed in and won 18 heats. Keaton Haughan, a young Redding Country Club member, said: “Other people were swimming so fast that I didn’t know if they touched the wall before me.”

Haughan wasn’t the only RCC swimmer who complained how hard it was to participate in three events in one week. Four of her RCC teammates also noted that the three-meet schedule made for a tiring week. But the team was focused on the Statelines tournament, so they continued to swim.

Throughout the three days of competition, these kids loved every minute of their meets and how close their times were to qualifying at Statelines on the 31st.

The next swim team event is Wednesday, July 23rd at West Mountain Country Club in Ridgefield.
