Memoir Writing and Self-Publishing Workshop at Weston Library

October 20, 2012 (Weston, CT) -- Have you ever thought about writing a memoir, but didn’t know how to go about it?  Marcelle Soviero, Wilton author and Editor-in-Chief of Brain, Child: The Magazine for Thinking Mothers, will teach a “Memoir Writing and Self-Publishing” workshop as part of the Friends of the Weston Library’s Lunch & Learn series.  The event takes place on Thursday, October 25 from 12:30 p.m. - 2 in the Community Room. 

Ms. Soviero will cover self-publishing a print and/or eBook and will discuss memoir writing essentials.  Ms. Soviero is a self-published author and her forte is composing memoir-type essays.  She will take attendees through both processes, sharing helpful tips on getting started.  Workshop goers should come equipped to take notes.  “One of the hardest parts of writing is getting started.  In this session we’ll get started and talk about ways to self-publish whether the memoir is meant just for family or destined for larger audiences,” said Soviero.   

Ms. Soviero, who has been teaching writing for 15 years and has an MFA in Creative Writing from New York University, is also the owner of Erielle Media, where she spearheads all Brain, Child magazine operations and editorial duties.  Brain, Child is the largest literary magazine devoted to motherhood.  Founded in 2000 (www.brainchildmag.com), the magazine’s contributors have included the works of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelists and acclaimed writers. 

  In addition to her editorial work, Soviero is an accomplished poet and essayist, teacher, artist, mother and stepmother and has recently penned An Iridescent Life: Essays on Motherhood and Stepmotherhood (June, 2012/available on Amazon.com).  The book celebrates the often untold positive aspects of step-parenting and parenting.  Soviero has been published in The New York Times, National Public Radio, Salon.com, Eating Well, New York Metro Parent, Babble, Literary Mama, Upper East Side Magazine, and others.  

Now residing in Wilton, Connecticut with her second husband and their blended family -- comprised of five children aged ten to sixteen -- Ms. Soviero teaches memoir writing, among other topics, at the Westport Writers Workshop and through Wilton Continuing Education.  She balances Brain, Child and teaching with her private writing/coaching practice.  She is also available to teach essay classes at local venues, including libraries and assisted living facilities, and can be contacted through her website at marcelle@marcellesoviero.com or at 203.563.9149.   The Friends of the Weston Library, a board comprised of ten people, provides services and implements events the library’s funding would not ordinarily allow.  “The Friends aims to provide interesting programming for the community.  We especially look forward to Ms. Soviero’s presentation on Self-Publishing and the ever-popular topic of Memoir Writing, as Weston is home to many writers,” said Lisa Pesco, Co-President of the Friends organization.  In addition to its Lunch & Learn series, the Friends also hosts documentary screenings, book groups, speakers and musical events.  Children’s programs have included a visit from animal behaviorists, a summer children’s film series, and a chess program.   Although Lunch & Learn events usually start at 12:00 noon, the Thursday, October 25 writers’ workshop will commence at 12:30 p.m.  Beginners and seasoned writers from Weston and beyond are invited to bring a lunch and attend at no charge.  The Weston Library is located at 56 Norfield Road, Weston.  For more information, visit www.westonpubliclibrary.org or call 203.222.2665.
