Over time, LaCava's skills improved. For rowing, he likened the Olympics to baseball's World Series and football's Super Bowl. He wanted a chance to compete on the sport's biggest stage.

LaCava said he was one of eight finalists to make the four spots on the Olympic team.

"Making the team was extremely difficult," he said. "Anyone could have made those four spots."

LaCava was ecstatic when he learned his made the team and qualified for the Olympics.

"It was a great feeling," he said. "I feel lucky that I’ve made it this far and lucky that I have good teammates and a lot of people to support me to get me where I am."

LaCava, who attended Weston schools through eighth grade, rows alongside William Newell, Anthony Fahden and Robin Prendes.
