Weston-Barlow Sports Roundup: Feb. 9

The boys hockey team will be hosting the first Annual Military Appreciation night on Feb. 15th at 6:40 when the Falcons take on New Milford at the Danbury Ice Arena.

In support of the night, the Falcons will be wearing, for the first time ever, a camouflage jersey. The jersey is specially made for this event.

The Falcons will be honoring local military members and veterans and will be playing military inspired music throughout the game.

On Tuesday, Barlow suffered a 4-0 loss to the Rockville Coop team. Playing a bit shorthanded due to injuries and illness, the Falcons gave up three goals in the first period.

Barlow settled down and blanked the Rams until giving up an empty-netter in the final minutes.

The Falcons rebounded to defeat Sheehan 6-3 on Wednesday as Michael Mattson registered a hat trick.

Mattson scored the only goal in the first period for Barlow, which trailed 2-1 after one. Mattson scored again in the second to tie it before the Falcons erupted for four goals in the third after the Titans regained a 3-2.

Charlie Berry scored two straiht to the Falcons ahead in the seesaw afair and Jack Cartafalsa and Mattson tacked on insurance goals.


Thierry Jean had 33 saves for Barlow, which improved to 10-4.

The New Canaan boys hockey team broke out of its mini-slump in a big way Wednesday.

Tyler Manchuck and Jack Stanton each scored hat trick as the Rams routed Staples-Weston-Shelton 8-2 at the Darien Ice Rink.

New Canaan, which snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 9-6. The Rams are tied with Trinity Catholic and Westhill for fifth place in the FCIAC standings.

Under the new postseason format adopted by the league,the top-six teams qualify for the tier one playoffs.

Jake Granito and Zeph West also scored for New Canaan, which led 7-2 after the second period.

The injured-riddled Wreckers, who have been dressing just 10 skaters, suffered their seventh straight loss and dropped to 6-8.

Forest Savage and John Mendillo scored for Staples.
