Saloon To Shut For One Day As Punishment For Underage Drinking

The bar has settled the case with the state, according to the Liquor Control Commission.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection announced yesterday that the Saloon would be closed on June 13 for alleged violation of two of the state’s statutes: sale of alcohol to a minor and permitting a minor to be in a barroom.

On Dec. 18, 2010, , in coordination with the Redding and Wilton Police Departments, found three of Redding’s bars to be in violation of the law — the Saloon, the and the .

John Suchy, director of the Liquor Control Division, explained the situation.

“We used two minors, who went to the Georgetown Saloon,” he said. “They were asked for identification. They presented their licenses. They were then served beer by the bartender on duty.”

Suchy said the Saloon paid a $250 fine, and was initially order to close for three days.

“Two days have been put in abeyance,” he said. “If they don’t have a violation within the next six months, they will not have to serve the other two day suspensions.”

Suchy said the two minors who went into the Saloon were 18 and 19.

“These are trained volunteers, doing this with permission [of their parents],” he said. After being served, “the youths just get up and leave the premises. They are under the observation of undercover agents and undercover police officers.”
