Seven Percent of Weston Remains Without Power

Seven percent of Westonites (286 customers) still don't have power. There's now only 40 customers in Redding (one percent) without power. Forty-one customers in Easton (1.43 percent) are also still without power.

Ten percent of Westonites are still in the dark, according to figures provided by Connecticut Light & Power. One percent of Redding—41 customers are still without power.

United Illuminating reports 55 customers—1.92 percent—are still without power.

The following power outages are being reported:

• Weston: 14 percent
• Redding: 1 percent
• Easton: 2.24 percent

Things are almost back to normal in Weston, Redding and Easton. Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating report the following power outages:

• Weston: 16 percent
• Redding: 2 percent
• Easton: 7 percent

According to the a press release from Weston town officials, on Monday there were 56 line crews, 20 tree crews and four service crews working in town, resulting in significant progress.

Weston Public Schools will reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 7 after being closed for more than a week. Dr. Colleen Palmer, superintendent, posted the following announcement on the school's website Monday afternoon:

All schools will reopen on Wednesday, November 7, with a full day of school.  The previously scheduled early dismissal planned for November 7 for K-8 Parent-Teacher Conferences has been cancelled.  The district will reschedule Parent-Teacher Conferences in the next few weeks, but we strongly believe it is more important right now to resume a regular school day for our students. 

Today the district’s transportation department is driving the bus routes throughout our town to check for 10-foot clearances to accommodate our buses.  While the roads may be passable for automobiles, there still remain numerous areas where buses cannot pass.  We are working hand-in-hand with the Town to identify roads where additional limbs or obstructions for buses need to be addressed today and tomorrow in anticipation of school opening on Wednesday.  Also, there still exist many power wires on the ground, some of which are energized, and these are being addressed for safety concerns as soon as possible.  While every effort will be made to ensure every street is absolutely safe for bus stops on Wednesday morning, we are asking parents to accompany their students to bus stops that first day back to school as an extra precaution.   A wind gust overnight can create a new hazard for the morning.

If there are a handful of streets for which bus stops may need to be relocated due to road conditions, those impacted families will be called personally before Wednesday morning to share alternative plans.  As families pile up debris from the storm and place these items at the street-edge of their properties, we ask that care be taken to not place piles directly on the streets, as these will become additional obstructions for our buses.

Thank you for your patience with the restoration of our transportation system for our district.  We are eager to welcome your children back to school.

Currently, Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating are reporting the following percentage of power outages:

• Weston: 29 percent
• Redding: 15 percent
• Easton: 17 percent

A car accident in Georgetown has knocked out power in Redding.

According to a press release sent by town officials, the accident occurred on Route 107 near Beeholm Road. 

Officials said power was expected to be turned back on by noon.

"Route 107 from the Rt 53 interchange in Redding all the way to the Georgetown area will remain closed for the repair," the release said. "At this time no reopening time has been announced."

Thirty-five additional crews from Western Massachusetts arrived in town earlier today with hopes of getting most of the town's power restored by midnight.

The updated outage numbers are as follows:

• Weston: 40 percent
• Redding: 54 percent
• Easton: 20 percent

United Illuminating reports that after beating its restoration goals on Thursday and Friday, it hopes to restore 95% of service by Monday.

As of 3 p.m. Saturday, 34,753 customers in the utility's service area remained without power, according to a company release. UI had performed approximately 215,000 restorations since Sandy first hit.

Currently 1,085 out of 2,861 UI customers in Easton, or about 38 percent of town, are without power, according to the utility's outage map

Company officials have set a goal for a total of 15,000 to 20,000 restorations on Saturday.

“While we’re proud of our crews and the progress they’ve made, we’re also aware that there are still many customers waiting for their service to be restored," said James P. Torgerson, chief executive officer of UIL Holdings. "Many of our own employees also have no power at their homes. We are grateful for our customers’ patience as we recover from one of the most powerful storms ever to strike the region."

United Illuminating is reminding customers who have sustained downed service lines to their homes to check their electrical equipment to make sure it is undamaged and capable of accepting electrical service.

UI workers may not be able to reconnect service lines in the event certain components are damaged (see attached graphic).

“As we continue to make steady headway with the overall restoration effort, it’s important that customers inspect the electric system on their own property," said Anthony J. Vallillo, UI’s president and chief operating officer, in a press release. "If there is reason to believe it is damaged, they should have a licensed electrician inspect it and make repairs. Unfortunately, failure to take this step could further delay the return of service.”

UI is responsible for repairing the incoming service wire leading to a home or business, including the service connectors that attach UI’s service to the property’s electrical system, however it is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure there is no damage to the wires and equipment after the connection point, as well as the entrance cable and the meter base to which the meter is attached.

A common cause of damage to a home’s electrical system is when the service wire is pulled from the connection to the property, UI said in its release.

Weather update: It is reported that it will get down into the 30’s this evening and only into the 40’s tomorrow. For those without heat, we recommend the Ridgefield regional facility on 194 Danbury Rd. It has ample room with cots, restrooms, internet and gyms for children and activity. They even have a pool. We have visited the facility and it is very comfortable and pleasant. If seniors need transportation to this facility, contact police at 203-938-3400.

Schools update: Superintendent Bernard Josefsberg has announced that Easton, Redding and Region 9 schools will be open on Monday and the minimum day on Wednesday Nov. 7. all schools will be in full session.

The following message was sent out to Weston residents via CODERED alert Saturday morning:

The Town will be accepting tree debris, free of charge, at the transfer station. Debris will be accepted until November 12. We will be open today for its normal hours, 8am-2:45. As a special service to residents, we will also be open tomorrow from 8am-2:45.

Voting will take place on Tuesday at Weston Middle School.  Polls are open 6am-8pm.

We have 35 CL&P crews working in town today, along with the National and Air Guard and town dpw crews. We hope to make significant progress.

CL&P still has finally given us a global restoration estimate of Tuesday evening by midnight. Please call CL&P customer service 1 800-286-2000 to get your personal restoration estimate. If you have an acute medical condition or if CL&P is saying you have power but you don’t, please call me at 222-2656 and I will put you in touch with a dedicated CL&P rep.

The Comfort Station will be open this weekend 8am to 4 pm. Children are not allowed in the High School without their parents. Please supervise your children at all times.  Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase.  Town Hall will be open today until 8pm for internet access and phone charging.

Weston Library will be open today from 10 am-9pm. Today is International Games Day. We’ll have board games and puzzles all day (10-4), Playstation’s Just Dance 4 on the big screen in the Community Room from 10-2, and Family Bingo from 3-5.

Update, Nov. 2, 3:52 p.m.

Weston schools will be closed on Monday, Nov. 5. 

Dr. Colleen Palmer, superintendent of schools, posted the following update on the Weston Public Schools' website Friday afternoon:

After receiving updated information from the Town today regarding the progress of clearing roads and restoring power to residents, there remain significant road blockages throughout the town and the majority of the town is still without power.  The road blockages are the driving force to close schools on Monday, and even though the Town has the benefit of the resources of the National Guard these past few days, it is unrealistic to plan that our roads will be able to accommodate buses on Monday.

While Tuesday was reserved for Parent-Teacher Conferences, the prolonged absence from work has left inadequate time for our professional staff to prepare appropriately to meet with parents.  Additionally, if possible, we would like to reserve Tuesday as a student day for school, returning them to classrooms.  On Sunday evening, the district will consult with Town Officials to evaluate the readiness of our roads to transport students on school buses.  If the buses can safely travel on Tuesday, we will open our schools.  Obviously, handling both the electorate traffic for voting and the normal schools’ traffic will demand careful planning and a few adjustments to the daily schedule.  If we open school on Tuesday, there will be a detailed communication to families on Sunday evening regarding parking and student drop-off areas.

In summary:

• No school Monday, November 5
• Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled for Tuesday, November 6, will be rescheduled to a later time to be announced
• Sunday evening a decision will be made regarding conducting school for students on Tuesday, November 6

Redding, Easton and Region 9 schools will reopen Monday and Wednesday, Nov. 7—previously scheduled as a half-day—will be a full school day for students.

The town of Redding sent out the following update:

CL&P is stating on their website that Redding is currently at 58% and stated that they are estimating 98% of the state to be with power by early Tuesday morning. As of today, CL&P has 17 road crews working in town and just added an additional tree crew to help accomplish the Sat. deadline of road openings. Although our town crews have been influential in helping CL&P get the roads cleared, CL&P is in charge of the restoration process. The following road areas were restored: The circuit that includes parts of Umpawaug, Old Redding Rd., Mountain Rd. and parts of Limekiln. The Rt 7 corridor is open which include the services on Rt 7. Caraluzzi’s is open. Although state roads have been opened in Redding, they may not necessarily be complete thru neighboring towns. CL&P are continuing their efforts to complete this. We have 184 roads in town and as of today only 1 resident is trapped and 16 road blockages remain to repair. These are of our highest priority. The police department has asked that residents please do not attempt to clear trees. They understand the frustration of getting clearing done for wire work.However, this puts residents at danger and could make matters worse. The updated map of open and blocked roads is on display at the Town Hall. Thank you for doing your part in getting the info to us and remaining patient.

WESTON: Weston High School will serve as a comfort station tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 2, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. There's tons available for residents there:

• Main Lobby: pianos, guitars, chess boards and comfortable seating
• Senior Lounge: foosball, ping pong, coloring, toys and books for children
• Showers available in gym locker rooms
• Chartwells will be serving meals in the cafeteria. Breakfast will be served Friday from 6 to 11 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m. Lunch will be served Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 to 3 p.m. Dinner will be served Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Meals cost $2 to $5 on average.

REDDING: The town provided an update as to the status of power restoration and road clearings:

"CL&P stated this morning that they are estimating 98% of the state to be with power by early Tuesday morning. Although we were hoping, no information was given by the town. As of today, CL&P road crews are continuing working in town and are now not only continuing road openings but have begun the restoration process. Although our town crews have been influential in helping CL&P get the roads cleared, CL&P is in charge of the restoration process.

"We have been updating them continuously with road status. Although state roads have been opened in Redding, they may not necessarily be complete thru neighboring towns. CL&P are continuing their efforts to complete this. We have 184 roads in town as of today with only 13 having total blockage and 20 additional roads that have low hanging trees and wires. These are of our highest priority. Thank you for doing your part in getting the info to us and remaining patient."

• Joel Barlow High School is open for showers from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• The Redding Community Center is open from 9 to 9 p.m. for electronic charging. Meals-ready-to-eat and water are available from 9 to 5 p.m.

EASTON: The town of Easton has provided a list of road blockages which occur on 55 roads in town. That list can be accessed by clicking here.

The number of power outages has escalated over the last 48 hours.

"An unfortunate consequence of clearing trees off live power lines is the loss of power to residents, in excess of the gains achieved through restorations," First Selectman Tom Herrmann said in a robocall Thursday afternoon.

• Easton's Halloween is postponed until Wednesday, Nov. 7.
• There are three make-safe crews and one restoration crew in town.
• United Illuminating predicts 95 percent restoration in Easton by midnight Monday.
• Helen Keller Middle School will be open for showers from 10 to 2 p.m. through the weekend.
• Joel Barlow High School will be open for showers from 8 to 8 p.m. through the weekend.
• Jesse Lee is open as a warming center from 9 to 5 p.m.
• St. Dimitrie's is offerring a spaghetti dinner tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m.
• Bottled water and MREs are available at the police station from 12 to 8 p.m. They also have water from a spigot. 
• The Easton Senior Center is open from 6 to 6 p.m.

Update, Nov. 1 2:33 p.m.

EASTON: Reverend Christine Kim, pastor of Jesse Lee United Methodist Church in Easton, said the church's doors are open for those seeking a place to get warm.

"We have set up a Warming Station for those who are without power. Please help us spread the word so that more people can receive the help they need," Kim wrote in an email to Patch. "We offer charging stations, water, hot coffee and snacks. We will be open on Friday from 9 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m." 

WESTON: Town officials just sent out the following CodeRed announcement:

"Because temperatures are supposed to drop into the 30’s this evening, the town will be opening an emergency shelter at the Weston High School. Cots will be provided. Please bring your own blankets, pillows and toiletries. We encourage all residents, especially the older population or those with younger children, to make use of this facility."

Update, Nov. 1 2:02 p.m.

The numbers keep increasing. The two utility companies which serve Weston, Redding and Easton now reporting the following:

• WESTON: 91 percent of customers (3,499 out of 3,808) are without power. Weston is the only town in state with over 90 percent in the dark. 
• REDDING: 79 percent of customers (3,108 out of 3,903) are without power.
• EASTON: 84 percent of customers (2,404 out of 2,861) are without power.

Update, Nov. 1 10:58 a.m.

Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating are reporting the following at this hour:

• Weston remains 80 percent in the dark, as 3,080 out of 3,808 do not have power.
• Redding remains 76 percent in the dark, as 2,989 out of 3,903 do not have power.
• Easton is 82.59 percent in the dark, as 2,363 out of 2,861 do not have power.

The good news for Weston and Redding is that they're trending in the right direction. 

Approximately 48 hours ago, United Illuminating reported 53 percent of Easton was without power. Since then, that number's steadily increased.

Per Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating, the powerless rates in the area are as follows:

• Weston: 93 percent (3,568 out of 3,808)
• Redding: 78 percent (3,060 out of 3,903)
• Easton: 76.34 percent (2,184 out of 2,861)

REDDING:

• Redding is planning a "Trunk-or-Treat" event this Saturday, Nov. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot at the Redding Community Center.
• The Mark Twain Library is now open during regular business hours, with computer access for the public. 
• The recycling center will be open through Saturday from 7:30 to 3 p.m. According to a press release from the town, commercial brush haulers can bring loads with written letters from resident with phone numbers and have appropriate fees waived.
• The fire marshall is reminding those with generators to make sure they run them outside. The fire department says it has received multiple carbon monoxide complaints from residents running the generators indoors.
• The Redding information line is 203-938-8816.

WESTON:

• According to town officials, the National Guard, CL&P crews and town crews worked to clear roads today. The town has compiled a list of blocked roads which can be accessed by clicking here. If residents see a road that's not listed, they're encouraged to call 203-222-2656. 
• CL&P has yet to provide estimates as to when power will be restored in Weston.
• Weston Library will be open from 9 to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The senior center will be open those days from 9 to 3 p.m. Town Hall is operating on normal business hours.
• The comfort station, located at the high school, is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Weekend hours are from 8 to 4 p.m.
• The town's automated storm line is 203-454-1161.

EASTON:

• Halloween will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3. More details are forthcoming.
• Two United Illuminating crews and one National Guard crew removed trees and downed wires today. There is one United Illuminating restoration crew in town as well. 
• "Progress is being made. Route 59 and Route 136 are now clear throughout town. However Route 58 remains blocked both north and south of 136."
• Helen Keller Middle School is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday for anyone wishing to shower. Joel Barlow High School will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. those days. 
• Bottled water, ice, and meals-ready-to-eat will be available at the Easton Police Department Thursday afternoon. 

Update, Oct. 31 2:31 p.m.

Connecticut Light & Power is reporting that 93 percent of Weston residents still don't have power (3,575 out of 3,808), while 76 percent of Redding residents (2,967 out of 3,903) don't have power. 

Update, Oct. 31 2:18 p.m.

Reader Chris Fumai says that in addition to the roads the town mentions on its website, Pilgrim Lane is also blocked in Weston, with a tree down on power lines. 

Update, Oct. 31 1:20 p.m.

Power outages have inched up in Weston and Redding since earlier this morning. According to Connecticut Light & Power, 95 percent of Weston residents are without power while 81 percent of Redding residents remain in the dark.

EASTON:

Easton power appears to be trending in the wrong direction. After being close to 50 percent restored yesterday, United Illuminating is reporting 78.05 percent of Eastonites are without power (2,233 out of 2,861).

WESTON:

Ninety-three percent of Weston residents remain without power. Town officials have posted the following information on the town's website:

"We know that many of you are trapped on your street due to downed trees and live wires. We ask for your patience as CL&P and town crews are work today to open as many roads as possible. We have posted a list of road closings on the town website."

Halloween has also been "canceled" in Weston. Instead, there will be a "trunk-or-treating" event at Weston Intermediate School Wednesday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m.

A comfort station located at the high school will be open through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 4 p.m. Residents can take private showers, access potable water, use the internet and charge their mobile devices. 

Weston Town Hall will open at noon Wednedsay and return to a normal schedule. Weston Library will remain open until 8 p.m. Wednesday and will be open from 9 to 5 p.m. tomorrow. 

Getting bored? Movies will be shown at Weston High School.

REDDING:

Connecticut Light and Power is reporting 78 percent of Redding residents remain without power.

Outages totals are as follows:

• Weston: 94 percent (3,584 out of 3,808)
• Redding: 74 percent (2,914 out of 3,903)
• Easton: 62.29 percent (1,782 out of 2,861)

REDDING (from the town's website): 

Sheltering and service facilities:              

• The Redding Community Center will be open starting Wednesday
• 9am-9pm for electronic charging and wi-fi.
• 9am-5pm for water, meals ready to eat, electronic charging and wi-fi.
• General shelters are available for Redding residents  
• Ridgefield Community Center at 194 Danbury Rd, Ridgefield
• Bethel Municipal Center at 1 School St., Bethel
• Danbury Hospital will also be providing “sheltering for the medically vulnerable” but no transportation is available for those individuals with functional needs.
• Joel Barlow High School will open for showers 8am-8pm starting Wednesday. Please be advised to take extreme caution with road conditions to this facility.

WESTON:

• Weston Public Schools will be closed through Friday, according to The Weston Forum. Dr. Colleen Palmer, superintendent, will consider if schools should open next week.
• A comfort station will be open in Weston tomorrow at the high school from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It will be open at least through Friday.
• The town will host a "Trunk or Treat" at Weston Intermediate School from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Trick-or-treating in the conventional sense is canceled, as roads remain hard to navigate.

EASTON:

• Showers will be available at Helen Keller Middle School from 10 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
• Residents can charge their cell phones and get water from a spigot at the Easton Police Department. 

Update, Oct 30 5:29 p.m.

Redding officials are encouraging residents to "ride out the storm in the most comfortable place," your home. 

According to the town's website, the Redding Community Center will be open on Wednesday at 9 a.m. "for water, MRE-meals ready to eat, electronic charging and wi-fi."

"Although it is not recommended at this time to travel to shelters, if there is immediate need, general shelters are available for Redding residents in Ridgefield at 194 Danbury Road and at the Bethel Municipal center 1 School Street. Danbury Hospital will also be providing 'medically vulnerable sheltering' but no transportation is available for those individuals with functional needs. Joel Barlow High School will open as a general shelter as soon as road conditions are deemed safe."

Update, Oct 30 5:11 p.m.

Some good news to report out of Redding: Connecticut Light & Power says 90 percent of customers are now without electricity (3,519 out of 3,903). That number stood at 98 percent today, so some residents are now out of the dark.

Weston still remains completely without power. 

United Illuminating is reporting that 55.92 percent of residents (1,600 out of 2,861) are without power, a slight increase from this afternoon.

Good news to report out of Easton: United Illuminating says 53.72 percent of customers are currently without power (1,537 out of 2,861). After what happened last year, it's likely most Eastonites would agree that's much better.

The 29 customers in Redding who use that provider are also all restored.

Redding and Easton schools will remained closed through the end of the week, according to an announcement posted on Joel Barlow High School's website. The schools are scheduled to reopen Monday.

Connecticut Light & Power is reporting 100 percent of Weston remains without power while 98 percent of Redding is still in the dark as well.

Weston had originally planned to open a comfort station at the high school, but Selectman Dave Muller said the plans have changed.

"We are going to be updating a comfort station at Weston Middle School from 4 o'clock to 9 o'clock today, Tuesday," Muller said. 

Weston schools are currently closed through Monday.

Weston Selectman David Muller told Patch this morning that there are 93 road closures in town, many of which involve downed power lines. Because of limited access in and out of town, the town's comfort station is not yet open. 

Ninety-nine percent of residents are also without power, and there is no estimate as to when power will be restored.

"We really encouraged people to stay home," Muller said. "It's still really dangerous outside."

Weston officials are scheduled to meet this afternoon to revisit the situation.

Power outages continue to get worse in Weston, Redding and Easton. The updated numbers are as follows:

United Illuminating is reporting that 83 percent of Easton residents (2,371 out of 2,861) are without power.

According to emergency services dispatches, the firefighter was "severely injured after [a] tree fell on [the] firetruck" on Judd Road. CPR was administered at one point, too.

As for the power outages, well, they're gotten worse:

• Weston: 98 percent (3,760 out of 3,808 customers)
• Redding: 97 percent (3,812 out of 3,903 customers)
• Easton: 54 percent (1,544 out of 2,861 customers)

Easton Police confirmed a firefighter was struck by a tree in the field. The incident "just occurred," police said, and remains under investigation. No other information is available.

As for power outages, Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating are reporting as follows:

• Redding: 85 percent (3,343 out of 3,903)
• Easton: 47.36 pecent (1,355 out of 2,861)

Stop me if you've heard this one before: Ninety percent of Westonites are currently without power. Connecticut Light & Power is reporting that 3,464 out of 3,808 households do not have power right now.

The amount of those without power in Redding has tripled in 10 minutes, with 61 percent (2,384 out of 3,903) without power.

Nearly half of Weston customers are without power, Connecticut Light and Power reports. The company is reporting 1,821 out of 3,808 customers (47 percent) are without power.

United Illuminating is reporting 47.36 percent of Easton customers don't have power. That's 1,355 out of 2,861 customers. 

Twenty percent of Redding customers are powerless at this time: 792 out of 3,903.

Thirty-one percent of Weston is without power, accounting for 1,191 of the 3,808 customers in town, according to Connecticut Light and Power. The amount of customers in Redding without power has climbed to 22 percent, or 891 out of 3,903 of customers without power.

United Illuminating is reporting that 7.17 percent of customers (205 out of 2,861) in Easton are without power.

There are now 495 customers (12 percent) without power in Redding, according to Connecticut Light & Power's outage map. The company was able to turn the power back on for some Weston households, as there's now 652 customers without power there, good for 17 percent.

United Illuminating is reporting 85 customers (2.97 percent) in Easton are without power.

Connecticut Light & Power is now reporting 1,116 Weston customers are without power, while 150 Redding households (3 percent) are as well. United Illuminating is reporting 127 Easton customers are without power, 4.44 percent of the population there.

According to the Connecticut Light & Power's outage map, 1,110 Weston households (29 percent) are currently without power. That number marks the third highest percent of those without power in all of Connecticut.

Only 25 of Redding's houses are without power.

United Illuminating is reported 103 customers without power in Easton.

According to Connecticut Light & Power, 15 Redding customers and one Weston customer are currently without power. United Illuminating reports zero outages for Easton residents.

Volunteers are currently being sought for the Weston Comfort Station, which, when it opens, will be in the high school. According to a press release sent out by the Friends of the Weston Library, that might not be until Wednesday night when roads are passable.

Gov. Malloy signed an executive order extending the in-person voter registration deadline in Connecticut to Thursday, November 1, at 8 p.m. for those who intend to vote in the upcoming election.

Weston Public Schools will be closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the town Web site. A decision to possibly re-open schools on Thursday will be made after the post-storm damage is assessed for safe operations of schools.

The Fourth Congressional District Debate between Jim Himes and Steve Obsitnik at Wilton High School is canceled at request of both candidates, because of the storm's approach and evacuation of Connecticut's coastal areas.

Easton, Redding and Region 9 Schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, according to its Web site.

"Any additional decisions about further closures will be announced as they are made," the message by Superintendent Bernie Josefsberg stated. "Good luck and best wishes in contending with Sandy."

The following message was sent to Weston residents via CodeRed:

This is the Town of Weston Office of Emergency Management with a Code Red update for Hurricane Sandy.

We will begin to experience the first effects from Hurricane Sandy early this evening. Unlike Hurricane Irene which lasted 12 hours, this storm is not predicted to weaken and we will be impacted at full strength for over 36 hours.

As the impending landfall of Hurricane Sandy approaches, please take the following precautions to protect your families and property.

1. Due to the latest predictions for storm surge, we are strongly recommending that if your property is prone to flooding that you make plans to evacuate.

2. If you have pets, put them on a leash and walk them, do not let them out to roam free

3. DO NOT TRAVEL DURING THE STORM. Due to excessively high winds, emergency vehicles may not be able to operate. As the eye of the storm passes, the winds associated with the storm will diminish. Stay indoors until the entire storm has passed.

4. Secure all windows, doors and outdoor items as they are susceptible to the high winds and may cause damage or injuries.

5. Treat ALL downed wires as if they are live.

6. Refer to the Town of Weston website at http://www.westonct.gov for updates regarding the storm.

7. The town has plans in place to open an evacuation shelter if necessary. Our primary location has been changed from the Weston Middle School to the Weston High School. Again, check the town website for updates.

8. Do not call 911 unless you are experiencing a TRUE life-threatening emergency. First Responders will only be responding to actual emergencies, when conditions permit them to do so.

Weston Town Hall, Library, and other Town services will open tomorrow morning (Monday, 29th) at the normal times, except for the Senior Center, which will not open. It is anticipated that town services will close early tomorrow, perhaps as early as noon. This is dependent on weather conditions.  We have already made the decision that general town buildings/services will not be open on Tuesday. Emergency services and Public Works will be staffed through the storm. We will make a decision concerning Wednesday openings, on Tuesday night. The Senior Center is on the school schedule, and will be closed at least through Wednesday.

Weston First Selectman Gayle Weinstein provided the following update on Sandy via CodeRed:

The State Meteorologist is predicting 36 hours of sustained high winds. Beginning Sunday afternoon, winds will pick up, turning into tropical storm strength before midnight. By Monday afternoon, we are anticipating hurricane gust strength winds lasting through Tuesday morning. We are not anticipating significant rainfall, with amounts totally 3-6 inches over the course of 36-40 hours.

Given this forecast, please plan on sheltering in place and being without power for several days.  Store enough food and supplies for a 72 hour period

 Do not attempt to travel during periods of high wind. Roads may be blocked with live wires and downed trees.

Easton First Selectman Tom Herrmann broadcast a reverse 911 voice call to residents on Sunday, according to the Easton Courier:

"Good evening, this is Tom Herrmann, your First Selectman, with important information as we all prepare for Hurricane Sandy.

Dr. Josefsberg, our Superintendent of Schools will be having a conference call tomorrow morning, Sunday, at 10 a.m. with other area superintendents to discuss multi-day school closures beginning Monday, Oct. 29.

We can expect an update on school closures after that call.

Please be sure you have an adequate water supply for drinking and cooking as well as for personal hygiene and toilet flushing. We recommend filling household bathtubs before the storm hits.

It appears that Halloween is once again bringing with it a monster storm. 

Experts expect Hurricane Sandy to smash into Connecticut early next week. Having learned from last year's Tropical Storms Irene and Alfred, officials are encouraging residents to be prepared.

Redding First Selectman issued a statement in anticipation of the storm.

"With the possibility of a major storm approaching the East Coast early next week, residents should use this time of early notice to get prepared, if they have not already done so," Ketcham said. "While we hope that the storm avoids landfall, and major impact, it is prudent to be prepared for a power outage and disruption to our daily lives."

"The Connecticut Department of Emergency Management has reminded municipalities that food and water distribution will not be available for residents until 72 hours after an event," she said. "Therefore, for tips on how to best 'shelter in place' for at least three days, please go to the Emergency Preparedness link on our website prepared by Our Public Health Officer, Doug Hartline. Adequate preparation will allow you to be as comfortable as possible in your own home during any period of restoration and recovery."

"The town of Redding is using this time in advance of the storm for preparation as well. While it is everyone’s hope that these measures will not be needed, experience has taught us the value of preparation," Ketcham said. "Experience has also taught us that we will weather this storm, if it does come, just as countless generations of Reddingites have, with characteristic resolve and grace. Hurricanes will come and go, but we have staying power."

The state has put together a hurricane preparedness guide and is encouraging residents to stock up on supplies before the storm comes. Information supplied by Gov. Dannel Malloy provides residents with an idea of what to have on hand:

Basic Emergency Supply Kit

• One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
• At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• A whistle to signal for help
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Can opener
• Local maps
• Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger.
